About Shaolin Kung-Fu

KUNG-FU or WU-SHU
Wu-Shu is the correct term for all Chinese Martial Arts; therefore Kung-Fu and Wu-Shu were originally the same. Literally translated , "Wu" is military, "Shu" is art.
Wu-Shu is therefore the art of fighting, or martial arts.
During the last thirty years Wu-Shu in mainland China was modernised so that there could be a universal standard for training and competing. In essence, much emphasis has been placed on speed, difficulty and presentation. Consequently, Wu-Shu has become an athletic and aesthetic performance and competitive sport; While "Kung-Fu" or as some like to refer to it traditional Wu-Shu remains the traditional fighting practise- they compliment each other! Tajiquan (Tai-Chi) is a major division of Wu-Shu, utilizing the body's internal energy or "chi" and following the simple principle of "subduing the vigorous by use of the soft."

Wu-Shu is a great martial art with roots dating back thousands of years in China, and has been recognized as an ancient Asian art for the self discipline of mind and body. Wu-Shu is the Mandarin Chinese word for "martial art," and is the term used in China. Westerners are more familiar with the term Kung-Fu, which actually translates roughly “time and effort” or in other words into "skill''.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

We believe in improving lives through the practice of the martial-art by teaching our students the rewards of martial-art spirit, martial ability, having a positive attitude, discipline, humanity and respect.

The Benefits of Kung-Fu

 Health and Fitness

By health, we mean not only being free from illness, but the ability to sleep soundly, to work energetically, to think clearly, and to be calm yet alert. By fitness, we mean not just physical strength, but the ability to react quickly, to endure hard work, and to concentrate without mental fatigue

 Character Training

Kung Fu teaching emphasizes moral development as well as physical training, stressing values like respect, courage, tolerance, and reverence for life. The very nature of Kung Fu training is a long process of character building. Wholesome qualities like endurance, perseverance, discipline, loyalty, and a calm disposition are prerequisites for progress, especially at higher levels. All these qualities, acquired through Kung Fu training, are transferable to daily life.

 Self-Defence

Self-defence is the essence of Chinese martial arts. True Kung Fu teaching always instructs students to be tolerant and avoid fighting, but the ability to defend oneself is a valuable asset. It is only when we know that we can defend ourselves effectively that we gain self-confidence.

How can Kung Fu help me?

Many people who have heard Shaolin Kung Fu are eager to learn how to punch through a 5 inch thick concrete wall and how to walk on the surface of a large river or lake.  Let me assure you, those are not possible.  Those techniques have been long lost.  Even if those techniques still exist, it would take decades of training as full-time Kung Fu student to reach mastery.

    n      For your children:

Shaolin Kung Fu can increase your child's confidence, courage, strength, and most importantly your child's body flex.  Children can also learn traditional discipline and ethic principles, and children will be capable of defending themselves when need.

n      - For teenagers:

Allow teenagers to exercise more effectively (as opposed to ineffective weight training or waste of money and time at "24 Hours Fitness Centres").  Kung Fu helps teenagers to focus on maintaining body balance and quick thinking.  You can choose to either practice hard-core techniques or soft techniques, there is no risk of sustaining serious exercise injury at all.  Not only will you learn Kung Fu, you will also train in body fitness.

n      - For adult:

Practicing Kung Fu several times a week can help you relieve stresses you sustain in your everyday life and it can also help reduce tensions in dangerous and stressful jobs.  Kung Fu is a martial art for training both body and mind.

n      For elders:

Kung Fu can help increase the prevention of disease and strengthen bones and muscles.  Elderly can defend themselves against powerful and stronger foes using Tai Chi (a branch of Shaolin Kung Fu).  Tai Chi allows elders to reflect enemy strength back to the enemy and requires little strength from users.  Perfect for elders who want to exercise and learn self-defence at same time.
